Chidambaram to be produced in Rouse Avenue Court

New Delhi: After a temporary hide and seek game, P. Chidambaram was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation from his Jor Bangh's (Delhi) residence on Wednesday night for his alleged role of corruption and money laundering in the INX media case.

Today, he will be produced in the Special CBI Court in Delhi's Rouse Avenue complex where another set of actions in this matter will be unleashed.

The CBI team will likely seek a14-day remand of the former Finance minister, who is expected to move a bail application. Since ED is also investigating this matter, they will also press for Chidambaram's custodial remand once CBI's remand ends.

According to reports, Chidambaram spent the night in one of the suites of the CBI Guest House in their headquarters after undergoing a routine medical examination at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. The formal questioning of Chidambaram is also underway before he can be produced in the Court.

Congress, Karti Chidambaram hits back

Reacting to this controversy, P. Chidambaram's son, Karti Chidambaram said, "This is a politically motivated witch hunt. It is being done only to tarnish the image of the Congress and to silence the most vehement critic of this government. He has been the most vocal, articulate and vehement critic of this government."

Congress spokesperson, Randeep Surjewala said that the former finance and home minister was arrested for an allegation made against him in 2007, almost a dozen years before 2019. He also stated that officials of the company which were involved in the case were not arrested. "A seasoned man with 40 years' dedication to the public was arrested on the statement of a jailed woman who has been charged with murdering her own daughter," he said, adding that there was no evidence against him in the FIR.ā€‹

Randeep Surjewala said that the Congress leader's arrest is a ploy to distract the people from the sinking economy and the "unfathomable crises in various sectors of the economy." He added that the Government is hell-bent upon using the CBI and ED as a personal revenge-seeking department and termed it as a personal vendetta.
