Conman held for duping Matoshree staff

Mumbai: A 19-year-old man has been arrested by Mumbai Police for allegedly trying to extract money from staff posted at Matoshree, the Bandra residence of Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, for a parcel he falsely claimed was ordered by Aaditya Thackeray.

Matoshree is the bungalow of Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray and has high levels of security.

The accused, identified as Dheeraj More, used to work as a delivery boy. He is a resident of Parel in Central Mumbai. He was arrested earlier for a similar offence and was released from jail recently.

Surprisingly, in the past, More had already swindled the staff at Matoshree thrice by posing as a deliveryman claiming he had a parcel for their boss, Aditya Thackeray. After duping Thackeray's staff, More thought to pull the same trick again and was caught.

The incident took place on Thursday afternoon when More arrived at the Matoshree posing as a deliveryman for a leading e-commerce company. He told the security guards that he was delivering computer accessories that Aditya Thackeray had ordered. Fortunately, Aditya was at Matoshree that day. After it was confirmed that Thackeray had not ordered anything, the guards immediately detained More who tried to escape. He was arrested by the Kherwadi police and was booked for cheating under the Indian Penal Code.

The police officials also released information that More had conned the Matoshree staff three times in the past, scamming an amount of ₹8500 from them. The first time, he delivered a pair of headphones he claimed was costing ₹2500 whose actual price was ₹500. Later, he delivered a book costing only ₹490 for ₹3000 and lastly, a computer mike for another ₹3000, which was much more than its original price.

"As the Yuva Sena Chief had been unavailable for the previous times it was not possible to check with him with the falsely claimed orders," said a guard.

After the incident, Aditya has told his staff not to accept any parcels without checking with him first. Security at Matoshree has been heightened in view of the incident.
