Hyderabad: The scheduled nationwide COVID-19 vaccination drive will begin on 16 January. In Telangana, the vaccination drive will be led by Governor Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan at the Nizam Institute of Medical Science (NIMS) in the city and state health minister Eatala Rajendra will be the first person to be vaccinated in the state.

"I am going to be the first to be vaccinated as the captain of this department and to boost the confidence of the staff," said Mr. Rajendra on 15 January.

On 16 January, the vaccination drive will be launched at 139 locations and from next Monday it will be rolled out from 1,213 centers.

The vaccination will continue for four days a week from 16 January with the coordination of local nodal officers in each district. The vaccine will be given to health workers on the first day. The government has said that around 13,900 health workers will be vaccinated on day one. Local MPs and MLAs will be present during the launch of the vaccination drive at health centers.

The health minister also said that the doses provided by the Central government is adequate for the staff of government and private hospitals. He also reiterated that there should be no questions about the efficacy of the vaccine. "The vaccine is for human welfare. Do not be afraid. The DCGI vaccine was made available only after all tests were conducted. Everyone must cooperate to drive coronavirus out of the state," he added.

Preparation for vaccine roll-out

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the first phase of the pan-India rollout of COVID-19 vaccination drive on 16 January at 10:30 a.m. via video conference. This vaccination programme will be conducted at 3,006 session sites across all states and Union Territories. Around 100 beneficiaries will be vaccinated on Saturday at each session site.

In Telangana, Mr. Modi will address health workers at Gandhi Hospital, Hyderabad, and Narsingi Urban Primary Health Center, Narsingi in Rangareddy district.

The vaccination drive is being conducted in four steps:

Step 1: Details of the individual, including name, age, Aadhar details, phone number, etc, will be collected.

Step 2: These details are then entered into the Co-WIN app. After an OTP is generated, the individual is sent for vaccine administration.

Step 3: The vaccine is administered to the patient.

Step 4: Those who have been vaccinated are kept in an observation room.
