Hyderabad: The Telangana Government has designated the ENT Hospital at Koti as the nodal centre for admitting and treating Black Fungus (Mucormycosis) cases. Patients who are Covid-19 positive and developed black fungus will be treated at Gandhi Hospital, said the Director of Medical Education.

"Few cases of Black Fungus(Mucormycosis) are being reported post COVID19 treatment from various parts of the Telangana State, many of these cases have ear, nose and throat(ENT) complications. It is decided that the ENT Hospital will be the Nodal Centre for managing these cases. If they are still covid positive or need multidisciplinary treatment those cases may be referred to Gandhi Hospital," said Dr Ramesh Reddy, DME.

He added that wherever there is a need for ophthalmologist intervention the services of SG Eye hospital need to be used. "The superintendent of Gandhi Hospital, ENT Hospital and SD Eye Hospital to take necessary steps in this regard," said DME.

Meanwhile, the DME has acknowledged the shortage of the drug Liposomal Amphotericin B used in treating these cases, as is the case all over the country. "This drug is not used widely, hence production is not as per the present demand. We are procuring it along with other alternative drugs like posaconazole and fluconazole to treat patients. People must not panic but approach hospitals on time for treatment," said DME.
