All of them had participated in the final rites of a 70-year-old family member. One of the relatives, who has been suffering from Tuberculosis was first tested positive. Later 21 others tested positive for Covid 19.
All 22 people have been placed under home isolation. Groceries, vegetables and other needs are being arranged by the local administration.
According to the district health officials, a week ago, a 70-year-old man residing in a gated community in Suryapet town died of ill health. A large number of relatives participated in his final rites.
Health officials said none of the 22 covid positive persons have any symptoms, but they are being constantly monitored. The entire colony is being sanitized regularly.
Health staff conducted a door to door survey to identify the primary and secondary contacts of the positive persons. They will be tested as per the ICMR guidelines if needed.
Health officials also clarified that the sudden spike in the number was due to a large gathering of the public during the final rites of the deceased man. However, there is no community spread and people are requested not to panic.
"All precautionary measures are being followed. Municipal and police authorities are already informed. People are also urged to strictly follow the health protocols like wearing masks, sanitization, and physical distancing. Mass gatherings and moving in groups should be avoided," they said.
