COVID-19: 49 foreign returnees test positive in Andhra Pradesh

Vijayawada: Another 49 foreign returnees tested positive for Covid-19 in the State on Tuesday.

This takes the total number of expatriates who tested positive for coronavirus to 111.

Of the 49 positive cases, 44 are those who returned from Kuwait, three from Abu Dhabi, and two from Qatar.

A total of 1,469 expatriates have arrived in parts of Andhra Pradesh as part of the Centre’s Vande Bharat Mission and Kuwait government amnesty programme. Another 1,000 expatriates are expected to return to the State in the coming days.

Though Andhra Pradesh have started receiving expatriates from May 20, the worst fears of the government came true when 17 foreign returnees tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday, 45 on Monday and 49 on Tuesday.

The Covid-19 tally in Andhra Pradesh increased to 2,983 including 111 foreign returnees and 153 migrant workers.

Of the 48 new cases, four are from the Chittoor district and have a travel history of the Koyembedu wholesale market in Chennai.

With another 125 patients including 70 migrant workers discharged till Tuesday, the total number of those recovered in the State now stands at 2,009. The number of active cases in the State is 806.

With one more Covid-19 death, the toll has jumped to 57 in Andhra Pradesh. The lone Covid-19 death was reported from the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh.
