Visakhapatnam:The Indian Coast Guard has seized 100 kg of heroin from a Sri Lankan boat at high seas, south of Thoothukudi, in a nine-day operation that started on 17 November. Officials involved with the seizure on Wednesday informed that six crew members have been apprehended, who have identified themselves as Sri Lankan nationals and are currently undergoing interrogation.
During their initial questioning, it has been revealed that the drugs were exchanged at high seas from a Pakistani dhow coming from Karachi. The drugs were meant to be sent to countries in the west and Australia. The Coast Guard has apprehended 99 packets of heroin, 20 small boxes of synthetic drugs, five 9 mm pistols, and a Thuraya satellite phone set. The drugs were found hidden in an empty fuel tank on board the Sri Lankan vessel.
According to the crew, the boat is allegedly owned by Alensu Kuttige Sinha Deeptha Sani Fernando from Negombo, a city on the west coast of Sri Lanka. All six apprehended crew along with the boat have been brought to Tuticorin port for further interrogation.
