Visakhapatnam: The Vizag police arrested six persons in two gangs for their involvement in circulating fake currency and semi-precious stones in separate incidents.

In the first case, two persons were arrested for trying to circulate fake Turkish liras, with a face value of Rs 45 lakh, claiming it to be genuine currency.

Special Enforcement Bureau (SEB) in-charge, ADCP Ajit Vejendla, said the accused, L. Vimal Kumar from Tirupati and Siva Prasad from Vizianagaram's Jami village, were arrested while trying to sell demonetised 100 Turkish lira currency, each of 5,00,000 denomination, for Rs 5 lakh.

The investigation revealed that the accused procured the currency from another gang in Chittoor district for Rs 70,000. These currency notes were banned in Turkey in 2005.

In the second case, four persons - Naga Giribabu of Sompeta in Srikakulam district, Govinda Sai Krishna, Sonali Babu Rao and Surreddy Dasavataram of Pendurthi area in Vizag city - were arrested for selling semi-precious stones.

The police said that Giribabu had purchased the stones from a person in East Godavari district's Rampachodavaram for around Rs 70,000. The other three were caught while trying to purchase the stones from Giribabu.
