2 police constables arrested for stealing money in West Godavari

2 police constables arrested for stealing money in West Godavari

West Godavari: Two police constables were arrested on 21 March for stealing money kept in a police station in West Godavari district.

The two constables have been identified as Usurumarthi Gangajalam from Patha Pattiseema village under Polavaram mandal and Gorrela Ganeswara Rao from Ananthapalli village under Nallajarla mandal.

On 15 March, due to bank holidays, supervisors working in government liquor shops situated in Veeravasaram, Rayakuduru, Konithivada, and Nauduru had placed cash worth Rs. 8,04,330 in a sealed box and kept it in the lock-up of Veeravasaram police station.

When the supervisors went to the Veeravasaram police station on 17 March to take the money, they found that the lock of the cell had been changed and there was no money in the trunk box. It was also found that the seal of the box had disappeared.

A case was registered under Sections 457 and 380 of the IPC. Suspicion fell on the police and West Godavari district Narayan Nayak formed several teams to nab the culprits.

West Godavari SP Narayan Nayak said the main accused, Usurumarthi Gangajalam, joined the police department as a constable in 2013. He was arrested in 2020 while playing cards in Patha pattiseema village and was suspended. Later, he rejoined his duties in 2021 and was posted at Veeravasaram police station on 2 February 2021 for election duties.

Meanwhile, the other accused, Gorrela Ganeswara Rao, rejoined had earlier been suspended. He has been at the Veeravasaram police station since 23 December 2020.

The two cops had come to know that supervisors working in government liquor shops had kept cash worth Rs. 8 lakh in the police station. On the night of 16 March, Gangajalam broke the lock of the lock-up with an iron pipe and took the box out. Later, he ripped open the seal and stole the money after breaking open the box. He disposed of the lock, the seal, and the box. Then they had changed the lock of the cell.

Gangajalam and Ganeswara Rao hid the money in the bushes in front of a temple in Veeravasaram. Later, they escaped with the money. Following a tip-off, Palacole rural CI and his team arrested both the cops and recovered the money.
