3 kg of narcotics meant for New Zealand seized in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: The officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Hyderabad Zonal Unit (HZU) have seized 3 kg of ephedrine/pseudoephedrine valued at Rs 60 lakhs (illicit market value) from two persons who had come to Hyderabad to book a package of the drugs to New Zealand.

Upon thorough examination of the package, two vacuum-sealed transparent packets were recovered which contained a white substance in powder form. When the powder was tested with a field test kit, it indicated positive for ephedrine/pseudoephedrine.

The two persons have been arrested under the provisions of the NDPS Act,1985.

Ephedrine and pseudoephedrine are classified as controlled substances under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. These chemicals serve as precursors for the illicit manufacture of amphetamine and methamphetamine, collectively referred to as Amphetamine-Type Stimulants (ATS).

Further investigation is in progress.
