On 19 August, the Chaitanyapuri police nabbed Kodumuri Srinivas (45), Allutla Uppalaiah (42), Thatikayala Surender (40), and Allutla Ganesh (21) at Mohan Nagar crossroads in Kothapet. All, except Ganesh, had worked either for CPI-ML or PDSU.
The police seized two CPI-ML visiting cards which were in the name of Srinivas and Uppalaiah, a car, eight mobile phones, 11 SIM cards, and other documents. Meanwhile, another accused, Venkanna, is absconding.
The police found that Uppalaiah had worked for CPI-ML while he was an intermediate student in Suryapet. Srinivas had also worked in CPI-ML in the early 2000s. The two men had been involved in several extortion cases earlier in Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh, and Suryapet district, Telangana. Surender, meanwhile, had worked in PDSU.
The trio had formed a group with the plan to extort money from rich businessmen in the name of collecting funds for CPI-ML and Raithu Coolie Sangam. The gang had extorted money from several people in 2019 but could not conduct their activities in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, they launched their extortion racket again this year and started calling businessmen and demanding money. Two people who had received such calls filed complaints against the gang and the Chaitanyapuri police registered two cases.
The police examined CCTV footage and other technical evidence, identified the accused, and nabbed them on Monday. The men admitted their criminal activities during interrogation.
