Chittoor: The police have taken into custody four suspects in connection with the suspicious death of a 16-year-old girl in Penumuru mandal in Chittoor.

According to the police, on September 17, a first-year intermediate student from a private junior college in Penumuru town went missing at around 6 pm. According to her parents, she was having fever and did not attend college on that day. After she went missing in the evening, the parents filed a missing complaint with the police.

Three days later, on September 20, a group of people, during Ganesh idol immersion, found a body in a decomposed state in a nearby lake. The parents confirmed that the body belonged to their daughter, and it was sent for post-mortem.

The preliminary investigation and post-mortem report revealed that there were no visible injuries or signs of violence on the girl’s body, thereby indicating a possible case of suicide.

Do not spread rumours, says police

After the news of the girl’s death became public, several social media handles were seen posting fake news, falsely claiming that the girl was raped and murdered. The police have requested people not spread baseless news and rumours on social media.

“The allegations on the girl’s head tonsured and thrown into the well are baseless. The investigation has found hair in the water because the body was completely decomposed,” said the police.

“We strongly discourage the circulation of baseless rumours on social media. For further investigation, the teams have taken samples from the body and the location. We have taken into custody four suspects in the case," said Sree Lakshmi.
