6.06 kg gold worth 2.96 crore seized at Hyderabad Airport

The customs officials at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad seized 6.06 kg of gold of 24 karats worth about Rs 2.96 crore from a traveler in the early hours on Tuesday.

Hyderabad: The customs officials at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad seized 6.06 kg of gold of 24 karats worth about Rs 2.96 crore from a traveler in the early hours on Tuesday.

The passenger arrived by flight EK 524 from Dubai. The gold was concealed inside a rechargeable lantern in the form of a battery. Customs booked a case for gold smuggling against the passenger and further investigation is underway.

Earlier on October 5, the customs recovered 1,209 grams of gold valued at Rs 58.16 lakhs from a passenger, who arrived by the same flight EK 524 from Sudan via Dubai. The gold was concealed in the undergarments and hand-baggage.
