8 injured in accident at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant

Visakhapatnam: At least eight persons, including a DGM-level officer, were injured in an explosion at Visakhpatnam Steel Plant on Saturday. The explosion occurred in the ladle which was carrying liquid steel in the SMS-II at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.

Of the total injured, six were contract workers and two were permanent workers. The injured were initially admitted to the Steel Plant general hospital for first aid but were later taken to a private hospital for better treatment.

The injured were identified as Anil Pahiwala (DGM), Jay Kumar (senior manager), Eswar Naik (technician) and Panda Sahu (chargeman). The contract workers were Bangarayya, Suribabu, Appalaraju, Srinivas and Pothayya. Two of them sustained over 60 percent burn injuries and their condition was said to be serious. Family members of the injured requested the management to shift them to Mumbai for better treatment.

DCP- Zone- II K Ananda Reddy said that ten persons suffered injuries in the mishap, but one person was not admitted to the hospital as he received minor injuries.

City secretary of CPM, B Ganga Rao, said the RINL management was ignoring safety aspects. He said during the last two years, 103 workers were injured, and five lost their lives. Expressing concern, union general secretary Mantri Rajasekhar said too many accidents were taking place in steel melting shops due to the negligent attitude of the management.
