Hyderabad: A Sub-Inspector (SI) from Amberpet Police Station has been placed under suspension after he was found allegedly involved in the misappropriation of gold recovered in a theft case and in selling his service revolver.

The matter, which had been under internal scrutiny for several days, formally surfaced on Wednesday following a preliminary inquiry by senior police officials.

Case booked, criminal probe launched

Amberpet police have registered a criminal case against SI B Bhanu Prakash Reddy and launched a detailed investigation. Senior officers confirmed that both departmental and criminal proceedings are underway.

A senior Hyderabad police official said the officer had been posted at the station for the past one-and-a-half years. “This is a grave offence involving serious violations of conduct and protocol. The investigation is being closely monitored,” the official said.

43 grams of gold were found missing

The case came to light after 43 grams of gold (nearly five tolas) recovered during the investigation of a recent theft case were found missing from official records.

The discrepancy surfaced after the victim lodged a complaint alleging that the entire recovered property was not returned. During verification, the officer allegedly failed to give a credible explanation for the missing gold.

Missing service revolver traced

During the internal inquiry, another serious lapse surfaced; the officer’s service revolver was found to be missing. Despite repeated questioning, Bhanu Prakash Reddy reportedly gave inconsistent responses regarding the whereabouts of the weapon.

Police sources said the missing revolver was later traced by the Task Force police, further complicating the case.

Online betting angle under investigation

Preliminary investigation suggests that the officer may have pledged the gold after suffering financial losses in online betting. However, police clarified that this angle is still under active investigation and no official conclusion has been drawn so far.

Senior officers order immediate suspension

After the matter was brought to the notice of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) and the Additional DCP, a preliminary inquiry was ordered.

Based on its findings, Bhanu Prakash Reddy was suspended with immediate effect. Further disciplinary action will be taken based on the outcome of the ongoing criminal investigation, police officials said.
