Visakhapatnam: Four workers were killed and another injured when a massive fire broke out at a pharmaceutical manufacturing factory at JN Pharma City in Anakapalle district on Monday night
Officials said the fire was caused after toluene solvent leaked from Unit-III of Laurus Labs Limited. When the workers were trying to plug the leakage, the chemical caught fire. Anakapalle police chief Gowthami Sali confirmed the fire accident at the Laurus lab. However, she said that they are trying to figure out the reasons for the casualties.
CITU leaders identified the deceased as T Rajesh Babu, R Ram Krishna, B Rambabu, and M Venkata Rao. The injured has been identified as Y Satish.
The bodies were shifted to the morgue at KG Hospital for autopsy. However, police, revenue, and factories departments are yet to officially announce the fatalities. Leaders said that the management of the various pharma firms at JNPC have been ignoring the safety norms. They allege that the officials of the various departments have been accepting kickbacks to remain silent, they added.
Trade unions said the fire mishap took place allegedly due to an electrical short circuit when the workers were cleaning the unit.
