Rayachoti : Four people were swept away by floodwaters at Rayachoti in Annamayya district on Friday night.

Their bodies were recovered from a sewer, two kilometers away from the spot.

The deceased were identified as Sheikh M. Ilyas, Ganesh, and Yamini. Their bodies were recovered on Saturday morning from a sewer in the Mandavya river, two kilometers from the incident site. Another victim also died in the floods. All bodies were shifted to a government hospital.

Transport Minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy, along with District Collector Nishanth Kumar and SP Dheeraj, visited the bereaved families on Saturday and assured full government support. He handed over ex gratia cheques of ₹5 lakh each to the victims’ kin and personally contributed ₹1 lakh to each family.

The minister described the incident as “shocking” and said Rayachoti had not witnessed such heavy rains in the past three decades. He urged people to remain cautious during natural disasters.

In another incident, heavy rains lashed Uyyalawada and Mahanandi mandals of Nandyal district on Friday night, causing widespread disruption.

The Rupanagudi tank in Uyyalawada mandal overflowed, leading to a traffic halt on the Kovelakuntla–Jammalamadugu route. A private travel bus was stranded mid-bridge due to the floodwaters. Local authorities, with the help of a JCB, carried out a three-hour rescue operation and safely evacuated all 24 passengers.
