Nandyal: An intermediate student was burnt alive by a stalker for rejecting his love proposal in Nandikotkur of Nandyal district.
The accused has been identified as 21-year-old Raghavendra.
According to the police, the incident happened on Sunday night when the victim was sleeping in her room. The accused knocked on her door, locked it from inside, and poured petrol on her. He later set her on fire.
Later, Raghavendra also tried to kill himself. Family members and locals who heard screams tried to rescue her but to no avail. While the victim died of severe burns, the accused has been admitted at Kurnool Government Hospital and is in critical condition.
Police have registered a case and started an investigation. According to the police, the accused has been harassing the victim, who hails from Samarlakota, Veldurthi Mandal. Concerned about her safety, the parents sent the victim to her grandmother's home in Nandikotkur. However, the harassment continued with the accused started visiting Nandikotkur.
On Sunday night, the accused stormed her house and set her on fire.
Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Anitha Vangalpudi spoke to District Superintendent of Police (SP) Adhiraj Singh Rana and directed him to form a special team to investigate the case.
