Vijayawada/Visakhapatnam: A Pocso court in Vijayawada sentenced a man to 20 years in jail and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 for sexually exploiting a minor.

The accused sexually exploited the minor girl with a false promise of love and marriage. The girl's parents came to know about it when she became pregnant. Later they lodged a police complaint in February last year. The court also ordered the district legal cell service authority in Machilipatnam to ensure that the victim gets Rs four to seven lakh compensation from the accused.

In a separate case, principal district sessions judge T Gopi sentenced a 31-year-old married woman to life for killing her mother-in-law in the Srikakulam district.

The judge also slapped a fine of Rs 2,000 on her.

According to brief details of the case, on August 14, 2017, the convicted woman Ch Shakuntala of Kothuru village thrashed her own daughter. Her mother-in-law Ch Ammanna (70) intervened and asked her to stop this behavior.

Enraged, Shakuntala pushed her mother-in-law to the ground and kicked her on her chest with the intention to kill her. The victim became unconscious and was taken to the nearby government hospital where the doctors declared her brought dead.

The victim's husband Ch Karuvu (81) lodged a complaint with the Koithuru police station. Shakuntala was arrested on August 16, 2017, and sent to judicial remand. The case came up for a final hearing on Tuesday during which the judge sentenced her to life.
