The police, quoting an eyewitness, said an armed man wearing a helmet and covering his face with a mask entered the bank and went directly to the cashier's cabin. He threatened to shoot him if he raised an alarm. He later asked the cashier to fill his bag with cash. The cashier loaded over Rs. 3.3 lakh cash in the bag and handed it over to the armed man.
The incident lasted about two minutes. People nearby and those outside the bank had no clue the bank had been robbed until police jeeps started crowding the street.
There were three employees at the bank and very few customers at the time of the robbery. The locals said the bank has no armed guard. They said one person entered the bank and looted while another waited outside on a bike with the engine on. The robbers fled the spot after committing the crime.
Anakapalle police chief Gowthami Sali visited the bank after the incident. The police suspect that the accused may be from north India as the main robber spoke Hindi while dealing with the cashier. They are examining CCTV footage from the bank and a few other locations in the town to identify and nab the accused persons.
