Hyderabad: A six-member dacoity gang attacked a 75-year-old retired Army captain at his residence in Gun Rock Enclave, Secunderabad, and escaped with valuables worth around Rs 50 lakh.
The incident occurred past midnight on Saturday, when the victim, Captain Giri (Retd), was alone at home.
Two of the accused, Nepali nationals were working as domestic helpers in the house and allegedly orchestrated the attack.
Domestic helps open door for Accomplices
According to Karkhana police, domestic workers Raju and Pooja, hired just last month through an agency in Attapur, opened the rear door of the house to let in four accomplices.
The officer, who was asleep on the first floor of his triplex home, had left his bedroom door open, which the gang exploited.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Trimulgherry Division) G. Ramesh said the couple had unrestricted access to the house as they were given accommodation on the ground floor.
Victim gagged, tied, and assaulted
Around 12.30 am, the six-member gang entered the bedroom, gagged the sleeping senior citizen, and tied his hands. They also attempted to force-feed him a sedative-laced liquid, but he resisted and spat it out.
Despite being overpowered and assaulted, the retired officer fought back while the gang searched the room.
Gold, Cash, and Phone Stolen
Police said the attackers pinned him to the cot and removed the gold chain, rings, and other ornaments he was wearing. They then broke open a cupboard and stole gold jewellery and cash stored inside.
While fleeing, the gang also took away his mobile phone, likely to prevent him from immediately calling for help. Another female domestic worker sleeping downstairs was reportedly sedated.
Victim manages to raise an alarm
After the gang left, Captain Giri managed to free himself and reached out to neighbours, who helped him contact the police.
A case of dacoity, assault, and attempt to administer a sedative has been registered. Police teams have begun searching for the accused based on the informatio n provided by the victim.
