Attention-diversion theft: Accused held in KPHB for stealing Rs 10 lakh from accident victim

Hyderabad: The KPHB police arrested a person in an attention diversion case. The accused, in the pretext of helping a person from a car accident, stole a bag containing Rs 10 lakh and fled.

The accused has been identified as Mudavath Shankar (26), a native of Nagarkurnool district and an auto driver residing in Suraram.

How did the crime unfold?

On November 7 at Addagutta Society, KPHB Colony, Uttam Kumar Varma met with an accident when his car hit a divider and he sustained injuries. The accused, who had been following the car in his auto, took advantage of the situation by posing as if he was helping the petitioner. He assisted in shifting the damaged car and towed it to 7th Gear Automotive Garage at Sanathnagar.

He further offered to drop the complainant at his residence in Addagutta Society, KPHB Colony. During this time, he diverted the complainant’s attention and stole the petitioner’s bag containing Rs 10 lakh. After the complainant noticed that the bag was missing and called the accused for clarification, the accused switched off his phone and fled. He subsequently used a portion of the stolen amount.

On November 14, the KPHB Police apprehended the accused near Chittaramma Temple, Gajularamaram, and recovered Rs 5,32,000 from his possession. A case has been registered, and further investigation is on.
