Banjara Hills man loses Rs 2.5 lakh after scammer extracts card details for ‘re-delivery fee’ of courier

Hyderabad: A 59-year-old resident of Banjara Hills was cheated of almost Rs 2.50 lakh after he clicked on a link requesting a Rs 25 re-delivery charge for a DHL delivery.
Case details
According to police records, the victim reported a fraudulent transaction on his credit card. While expecting a DHL delivery and following up for two days, he received an SMS on December 2, around 11:30 am, from an unknown number, stating that two delivery attempts had failed. The message requested a Rs 25 re-delivery charge through a provided link.
Believing the message to be genuine, he clicked the link and entered his credit card details and OTP for the Rs 25 payment, after which a fraudulent transaction of Rs 2,49,616 was immediately deducted from his card without his authorisation.
A case has been registered and further investigation is on.
Public advisory
1. Fraudsters send fake SMS messages claiming failed courier deliveries and ask for small re-delivery charges.
2. Do not click on unknown links sent via SMS or WhatsApp.
3. Never enter credit/debit card details, CVV or OTP on unverified websites.
4. Genuine courier companies do not ask for payments through SMS links.
5. Always check delivery status only through the official website or customer care of the courier service.
6. Delete suspicious messages immediately without responding.
7. If you have shared details or notice unauthorised transactions, contact your bank and block your card immediately.
