Basar (Nirmal district): A weekend pilgrimage to the sacred Gnana Saraswathi Temple at Basar ended in tragedy as five young devotees from Hyderabad drowned in the Godavari River while taking a holy dip on Sunday.
The deceased have been identified as Rakesh (17), Vinod (18), Madan (18), Ruthvik and Bharath (24), all hailing from Chintal Bazaar in Dilsukhnagar. They were part of an 18-member group comprising three families who had travelled to Basar for a religious visit.
According to police, the incident occurred when the group was bathing in the river. The five victims, who were not trained swimmers, unknowingly entered a deep section of the water and were swept away by the strong currents.
Upon receiving an alert from family members, police teams quickly reached the spot and launched a rescue operation with the help of expert divers. The bodies were later recovered from the river.
The tragic event has cast a shadow over the temple town, prompting authorities to caution visitors against entering unsafe areas of the river, especially during the monsoon season when water levels can rise suddenly.
