Hyderabad: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has booked a case against Father Colombo Medical Institute of Sciences in Warangal, naming its trustee Father Joseph Kommareddy in a major bribery scandal involving the National Medical Commission (NMC).
Bribes paid in instalments for approval
According to the CBI FIR, the medical college allegedly paid bribes in two instalments ā Rs 20 lakh and Rs 46 lakh ā through middlemen to NMC officials to secure favourable inspection reports and approvals despite lacking adequate infrastructure and faculty.
Dummy staff and rented doctors to mislead inspectors
The investigation revealed that the college did not have regular teaching staff or doctors. Instead, it hired temporary faculty and rented doctors only during inspections to create an illusion of compliance before sending them away once inspections ended.
Consultants played key role
The CBI identified several key operatives in the scam: Dr B Hari Prasad from Kadiri, Dr Ankam Rambabu from Srinagar Colony, Hyderabad and Dr Krishna Kishore from Akkayyapalem, Visakhapatnam.
Dr Hari Prasad allegedly worked as a consultant for multiple colleges, arranging dummy faculty, preparing forged documents, and collecting bribes to facilitate NMC approvals.
Rs 50 lakh routed through hawala
In a related development, investigators found that Rs 50 lakh collected from the director of Gayatri Medical College, Venkat, in Visakhapatnam was transferred to Delhi via hawala channels for bribing NMC officials.
Health director named in FIR
The CBI FIR also names Andhra Pradesh health director Poonam Meena, alleging she instructed her staff member, Piyush Malyan, to gather inspection dates in advance to help the colleges in their illegal activities.
Nationwide crackdown continues
So far, the CBI has arrested six people in the case and conducted raids at over 40 locations across the country, including Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Delhi. More officials and middlemen are likely to be summoned for questioning in the coming days.
