Four dead, 22 injured as truck rams into private bus in Chittoor district

Chittoor: Four passengers were killed and 22 others injured when a dumper truck hit a private bus near Gangasagaram on the Chittoor-Thatchur Highway on Friday.

The accident occurred when a Madurai bound private bus with 26 passengers on board was en route to Trichy from Tirupati lost its control and overturned while attempting to evade a parked truck.

The truck was stationary on the highway as part of ongoing construction works on the stretch.

ā€œFour passengers died on the spot and 15 others sustained injuries. Of them, four are seriously injured. 11 persons sustained minor injuries,ā€ said Chittoor sub-divisional police officer T Sainath.

He added that the truck hit the bus on its side.

Injured passengers were taken to Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences, and other hospitals, said Sainath.

ā€œA case was registered under section 106 of BNS. We are investigating the collision. Preliminary findings indicate that negligence and overspeeding may have been factors. The truck driver is absconding,ā€ he said.

The identity of the deceased have not yet been revealed by the police, and attempts are underway to inform the impacted families.

Meanwhile, Chittoor District Collector Sumit Kumar visited the government hospital to assess the situation. He asked the medical personnel to provide the best possible care for the victims.
