Customs seize 472 grams of gold worth Rs. 23L at RGIA

Hyderabad: Customs officials seized 472.8 gm of gold worth Rs. 23.33 lakhs at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad on Monday. The gold was retrieved from a flight that arrived from Guwahati.

The paste of the yellow metal was found concealed inside a packet and hidden under a passenger seat, Customs sources said. A case has been registered and the investigation is underway.

Meanwhile, the cases of gold smuggling and retrieval reported at RGIA are increasing rapidly.

A catering employee of a flight was apprehended on 29 November for stealing smuggled gold concealed in flights arriving from the Middle East. Two gold bars weighing one kg each bearing foreign markings and two thin gold sheets weighing 100 gm each, both worth Rs. 1.09 crore, were recovered from him.

In the last week, RGIA saw four gold smuggling cases.

On 27 November, the Customs officials at RGIA seized 410 grams of gold worth about Rs. 20.30 lakh from a passenger. The gold was concealed inside a talcum powder tin and suitcase frames. The gold was seized from a passenger who arrived in RGIA from Dubai on an Indigo flight.

On 25 November, Customs had registered a case against a passenger for smuggling 320 gms of gold worth Rs. 15.75 lakh concealed inside deodorant bottles and toy cars. The passenger arrived from Dubai on an Air India flight.

On 23 November, the Customs department had registered a case against a passenger for smuggling 233.4 gms of gold worth Rs. 11.56 lakh. The passenger who arrived from Sharjah had concealed gold in two wristwatches.

On 22 November, gold, foreign currency, and iPhones worth Rs. 29 lakh were seized from three passengers at RGIA.
