Cyber crime cops warn people against fraudulent links to spinning wheel contests

Hyderabad: Fraudsters are now luring people by promising exciting prizes in spin the wheel contests. The Cyberabad cyber crime police station has received complaints from a few victims who were tricked in such a way.

Recently, many such phishing links that redirects a person to a lucky spin the wheel contest are circulating on WhatsApp, social media, and e-commerce sites. After clicking on the link, the victim is redirected to a spinning wheel where, after spinning, a pop-up opens that says "u won a mobile/prize". The victim is then asked to share the link with others. Through these links, the data of the user is being compromised and later money is being debited from their accounts, the police said.

In view of the rampant increase of circulation of such phishing links, the Cyberabad cyber crime police have advised the public to take precautionary measures while clicking on such links. In an advisory, the cyber crime police asked people not to click on links circulating on social media and verify the links and sites they are redirected to. "Do not believe in the gift offers/prizes online. Please verify. Do not click on any links as your personal data may get compromised," the advisory read.
