DCA raids quack’s clinic in Suryapet, seizes drugs worth Rs 1.5 lakhs

Hyderabad: Based on credible information, The Drugs Control Administration (DCA) officials on Monday raided the premises of a fake doctor Thota Prasad Babu in Nayanagar Main Road, Kodad, Suryapet District. The DCA officials seized the stock of drugs, worth a total of Rs 1.5 lakhs during the raid.

The officials said that Prasad Babu was running his Sai Ram Poly Clinic without authorisation, treating patients regularly as a ‘rural medical practitioner’ without qualifications.

During the raid, DCA officials detected huge stocks of medicines stocked on the premises without any drug license. As many as 87 varieties of medicines, including antibiotics, analgesics, anti-ulcer drugs, anti-hypertensives, etc., were found stocked at the premises.

DCA officials detected several ‘antibiotics’ at the clinic during the raid. Indiscriminate sale of antibiotics, by unqualified persons may have disastrous consequences on the health of the rural public, including the emergence of ‘Antimicrobial Resistance’.

The DCA officers lifted the samples for analysis. Further investigation will be carried out and action will be taken as per the law against all the offenders.

Public advisory

Wholesalers/Dealers who supply medicines to such unqualified persons, stocking and selling drugs without a drug license, are also punishable under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, and stringent action shall be taken against such, the DCA officials said.

Wholesalers/Dealers shall mandatorily ensure that the recipient entities hold a valid drug license before supplying medicines to them. The Drugs Control Administration, Telangana, issues drug licenses for the stocking and selling of medicines in accordance with the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.

Stocking drugs for sale without a drug license is punishable under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, with imprisonment for up to five years.

DCA raids

The DCA has been conducting a series of surprise checks on unqualified persons engaged in stocking and selling drugs without any drug license. In a recent raid, DCA officials of Telangana seized various medications like Khadirarishta, Ekanagneer Ras, Simhadi Guggulu, Stonil 24 Tablets, Ayur Phala Neem Leaf Powder and Diclodan Forte Tablets for their misleading advertisements, overpricing, and distribution by unlicensed practitioners.
