DCA seizes 19 types of medical stocks from illegal distributor in Moosarambagh
The raid was conducted based on credible information regarding illegal stocking and sale of medicines
By Anoushka Caroline Williams Published on 27 July 2024 9:55 AM GMTHyderabad: The Drugs Control Administration (DCA) of Telangana raided an unlicensed medical distributor and seized 19 varieties of medicines, including habit-forming drugs, steroids, antibiotics, abortifacient drugs, anti-hypertensive drugs, and anti-diabetic drugs.
The total value of the stock seized was Rs 3.5 lakhs. The raid was conducted on the firm Wareworx in Moosarambagh here on Friday.
āThe raid was conducted based on credible information regarding illegal stocking and sale of medicines,ā said the DCA in a press release.
DCA officials have lifted samples for analysis and will conduct further investigations. The offenders face legal action under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, which prescribes imprisonment of up to five years for stocking drugs without a license.
Seizure at quackās clinic in Rangareddy District
In another operation on the same day, the DCA raided a clinic operated by P Thirumalachari in Nallagandla, Serilingampally Mandal, Rangareddy District.
The clinic was found to be operating without proper medical qualifications and a drug license.
Officials seized 18 varieties of medicines, including antibiotics, anti-ulcer drugs, analgesics and cough syrups, valued at Rs 8,000.
āIndiscriminate sale of antibiotics by unqualified persons can lead to serious public health issues, including antimicrobial resistance,ā warned the DCA. Samples were lifted for analysis, and actions will be taken under the law against those involved.
Misleading advertisements on medicines
A special drive conducted on July 26 and 27 led to the seizure of several medicines with misleading advertisements.
The seized products include Mensoguard Syrup, Tulasi Churna, Orthum Pain Oil, Zecuf Cold Medicated Tablets and Ovaryl Forte Syrup. These products falsely claimed to treat various conditions, such as female diseases, fever, rheumatism, and uterine disorders.
āSuch misleading claims are in violation of the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954,ā the DCA noted. Legal action under this act can result in imprisonment for up to six months or a fine.
Public advisory
The DCA urged the public to report any suspected illegal activities related to drugs, including manufacturing in residential or commercial areas. Reports can be made through the DCAās toll-free number 1800-599-6969, operational from 10:30 am to 5 pm on working days.
