DCA seizes fake ayurvedic remedies for depression in Sircilla

Hyderabad: The Drugs Control Administration (DCA) of Telangana has seized certain ayurvedic medicines from the market, citing misleading claims on their labels.

The seized medicines include labels such as Triphala Guggulu Tablets and Ashwagandhadi Lehya, advertised as treatments for obesity and depression-related anxiety, respectively.

Case details

On Saturday, DCA officials conducted raids in various districts, targeting medical shops and outlets selling these medicines.

The first product, Triphala Guggulu Tablets, manufactured by Siddh-ayu Ayurvedic Research Foundation, was found at a medical shop in Choutuppal, Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri District. The label on the product claimed it could treat obesity, which the DCA identified as misleading.

Similarly, Ashwagandhadi Lehya, produced by Manphar Ayurvedic Drugs in Vijayawada, was detected in a medical shop in Sircilla. The product claimed to relieve depression and associated anxiety, which also falls under prohibited claims as per the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954.

Legal framework and actions

The Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act of 1954 prohibits advertising medicines for the treatment of certain diseases and disorders, including obesity and mental health conditions like depression.

The act aims to prevent the public from being misled by false claims and ensures that only scientifically proven treatments are promoted.

Drugs Inspector J Ashwin Kumar (Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri) and Drugs Inspector L.R.D. Bhavani (Siricilla) led the raids. According to the DCA, further investigations will be conducted, and legal action will be taken against those found violating the law. Offenders under this act may face imprisonment of up to six months, a fine or both.

Public advisory

The DCA has urged the public to report any suspected illegal activities related to drugs, including the manufacturing of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, in residential, commercial or industrial areas. Reports can be made through the DCAā€™s toll-free number 1800-599-6969, available from 10:30 am to 5 pm on all working days.

In an official statement, VB Kamalasan Reddy, IPS, director general of the Drugs Control Administration, Telangana, emphasised the importance of adhering to the law and preventing misleading advertisements. He noted that the administration remains vigilant in monitoring the market and taking necessary actions to protect public health.
