Eluru woman, daughter end life after police refuse to register molestation case

Eluru: Apparently depressed after a sub-inspector of police refused to register a sexual assault case, a 12-year-old girl and her mother died by suicide at Vegivada under Pedavegi mandal in Eluru district.

The locals said Chittibabu allegedly molested the girl on 12 September while she was on her way home. The girl told her mother of the assault.

The girl and her mother approached the Pedavegi police station to lodge a complaint against the accused but the sub-inspector, K. Satyanarayana, abused them instead of registering a case.

Unable to bear the insult, the woman and her daughter consumed poison on 16 September. The two fell unconscious and were shifted to a hospital in Vijayawada city, where they lost their final breath on Sunday.

The incident has triggered protests with protestors blaming the police officer for the woman and the girl's deaths. Leaders and activists of TDP alleged that crimes against women and children have been increasing in the state due to the failure of the police. The latest incident is another example of how the police are trying to protect the accused in the state, they added.

Meanwhile, the police have suspended sub-inspector Satyanarayana for negligence in discharging his duties.
