Hyderabad: A 47-year-old advocate was arrested by the Vanasthalipuram police on 20 March for trying to murder his family. A pistol, three rounds of live ammunition, and a knife were seized from him.

Banala Ajay Kumar opened his practice in 2002 and married B. Ramadevi the same year. The couple had a son and a daughter.

In 2004, Ajay was appointed as the additional public prosecutor in the Telangana High Court till 2010. After completion of his term, he started a private practice at Nampally court. In 2018, he was again hired as an additional public prosecutor at Nampally court till 2021.

Ajay had obtained an arms license last year and purchased a pistol for self-protection.

According to the police, Ajay was an alcoholic and he used to come home, located at CBI Colony in Vanasthalipuram, drunk. He would quarrel with his wife and children and beat them. They had told him several times to change his ways but that had only angered him. Twice Ajay had threatened his daughter with a gun.

On the night of 19 March, Ajay picked up a quarrel with his family and threatened his daughter with a gun. When her brother tried to rescue her, Ajay aimed the gun at him. Their mother managed to snatch the gun from her husband but then the latter took a knife from the kitchen and went after his son. The three, however, managed to escape.

Ajay was arrested on 20 March and produced in court. He was sent to the Cherlapally jail.

The police said that in view of his volatile state of mind and violations of his arms license, his license will be cancelled following due procedure.
