Hyderabad: A former reserve sub-inspector (RSI) was arrested by the Jubilee Hills police on Thursday for extorting and threatening a person.

The police had received a complaint that RSI A. Kishan Rao, who lives in the Yusufguda police quarters, had extorted Rs. 39 lakhs from the complainant Abbas. Rao had threatened Abbas with a gun when he was asked to return the money.

Rao had also threatened to charge Abbas under fake cases if he spoke up. The RSI had taken the money under the pretext of settling a land dispute.

The police recovered two air rifles, an air gun, a pistol-shaped cigarette lighter, bundles of promissory notes, old currency notes, and five four-wheelers.

As per the statement issued by the Jubilee Hills police, Rao joined the AR department as an RSI in 1985. He had been arrested in 1996 for firing his service revolver in Maharashtra's Chandrapur district. He was seriously injured in an accident while under suspension and was bed-ridden for a long time. Following the accident, he had been unable to walk properly.

Rao was removed from service in 2018 but was staying in the police quarter that was given to his brother who had died in an encounter in 2010.

While staying in the Yusuguda police quarters, Rao claimed to be a DIG-level police officer and told Abbas he would settle the land dispute. He had extorted millions from people who came to him with land issues. However, he did not settle any disputes.

Rao also promised to provide government jobs to many unemployed people. The police found that he used to take the candidates' original certificates and harass them.

A charge sheet was also filed against his wife and son in the case. It is learned that cases have been registered against him in various districts. An investigation is underway, the police said.
