Hyderabad: A woman from Hyderabad lost Rs 1.3 lakh after falling prey to a cyber fraud involving a fake army officer and a furniture sale ad on Quikr.
The victim had responded to an online advertisement for second-hand furniture. After posting her contact number, she was approached by an individual who claimed to be an army officer. Gaining her trust, the fraudster offered to sell not just the furniture but also a laptop and other items.
Scammer insisted on 20% advance
He insisted on a 20 per cent advance payment for delivery and later demanded more money under the pretext of GST and additional charges. By the time the woman realised it was a scam, she had already transferred Rs 1.30 lakh to the fraudsterās account.
She subsequently filed a complaint with the Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police. A case has been registered and an investigation is underway to trace the accused.
Public advisory
Police have urged the public to remain cautious while dealing with online sellers and to verify the authenticity of advertisements and individuals before making any financial transactions.
