Visakhapatnam: Five members of the outlawed Maoist party surrendered before the ASP Visyasagar Naidu at Chintapalle in Visakhapatnam district on Saturday.

They were identified as Mattam Matyaraju, 26, Korra Sanyasi Rao, 40, Korra Hari, 35, Mattam Bhagat Ram, 25, and Korra Purnachander 26.

With this, 13 militia members from the Chintapalle sub-division have surrendered in November, ASP Naidu said.

He said efforts of community policing created awareness among the active members.

Volleyball matches and medical camps were organized in a big way in the agency and the response has been overwhelming, he added.

He said CRPF personnel also organized civic action programmes for the local youth. "This helped in the surrender of the extremists. The surrendered militia members also gave assurance to the police that they would not pick up arms," he said.
