Hyderabad: A 38-year-old woman IT professional was allegedly molested by a co-passenger on a flight from Chennai to Hyderabad on Friday.
The accused, a man in his mid-40s and employed in Chennai, was arrested by the RGIA police after the woman complained on landing, the police said on Sunday.
Incident mid-air
According to police, the woman was travelling with her husband from Chennai to Hyderabad. The accused, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol, was seated next to them.
During the journey, the couple had fallen asleep. As the flight was preparing to land at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), the woman felt someone touching her inappropriately. Startled, she noticed the accused’s hand and immediately raised an alarm, alerting her husband and cabin crew.
Complaint filed at RGIA
Once the flight landed, the woman approached the RGIA Police Station and lodged a formal complaint. Based on her statement, a case was registered against the passenger under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for outraging the modesty of a woman.
Accused claims it was accidental
The accused, who was en route to Uttar Pradesh via Hyderabad, was taken into custody soon after the complaint. During interrogation, he claimed that he had accidentally touched the woman and did not intend any misconduct.
Police, however, said they are verifying the claim and gathering corroborative evidence, including possible eyewitness accounts and flight crew statements.
Investigation underway
A senior police official said the matter is being investigated thoroughly and appropriate legal action will follow based on the findings. “Such behaviour on flights is taken very seriously. Further investigation is in progress,” the official added.
