Fraudsters use fake PayTm app to cheat shopkeepers, arrested

The Hyderabad police arrested eight persons on 3 February for using a fake PayTm app to cheat shopkeepers. The police recovered clothes, sports goods, groceries, and gold worth Rs. 75,200.

Fraudsters use fake PayTm app to cheat shopkeepers, arrested

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad police arrested eight persons on 3 February for using a fake PayTm app to cheat shopkeepers. The police recovered clothes, sports goods, groceries, and gold worth Rs. 75,200.

According to the police, the accused learned about the fake app called 'Payatm spoof' from YoutTube videos. They downloaded the app from Play Store. They then visited stores, purchased items, and asked the shopkeepers for a bill. They paid it through the fake PayTm app which showed that the amount had been paid. Later, the shopkeepers found out that the money had not been paid and they had been cheated.

While Google has removed the fake app from Play Store, some apps are still available online. The police have warned people and particularly shopkeepers to stay alert about such fake apps and report any such instances immediately to the concerned authorities.

The accused have been identified as Mohd. Mustafa Hussain Muzakir (20), Syed Aamir Hassan (24), Syed Iliyas (25), Syed Wajeed Ali (27), Hafeez Rana (23), Mohd. Salman (20), Mohd. Abdul Shahed (22), and Mohd. Yousuf (18). All are residents of Hyderabad.
