The accused allegedly entered the premises past midnight after studying the campus security system and identifying vulnerabilities.

Gachibowli police arrest 3 in University of Hyderabad laptop theft case; 60 laptops seized

Hyderabad: In a swift breakthrough, Gachibowli Police cracked the sensational theft of 60 laptops from the CR Rao AIMS premises at the University of Hyderabad (HCU).

The police arrested three persons, including two engineering students of the university.

The entire stolen property has been recovered, which include 60 stolen laptops, three mobile phones, two cars used in the commission of the offence.

The theft came to light after institute authorities lodged a complaint, following which a case (Crime No. 255/2026) was registered on February 9 under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Acting on technical evidence and CCTV footage, police traced and apprehended the accused within a short span.

Accused include two B.Tech students

The arrested persons were identified as: Regula Chandra Shekar (30), a native of Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh and resident of Kukatpally.

Cherukuri Sai Charan (19), a B.Tech second-year Computer Science student at HCU, and Uduthalapelly Ashwin Rao (19), also a B.Tech second-year Computer Science student at HCU.

The two students were staying at a private hostel in Gowlidoddi. Police arrested all three on February 15 at Nextzen Hostel in TNGOs Colony, Gowlidoddi.

Theft executed using campus knowledge

According to investigators, the accused were familiar with the campus layout and security arrangements. They allegedly entered the CR Rao AIMS building during late-night hours and decamped with 60 laptops.

Police said the stolen laptops were intended to be sold for wrongful gain.

Swift investigation, full recovery

Special teams were constituted immediately after the FIR was registered. Investigators carefully examined CCTV footage and gathered technical evidence, which led to the identification and arrest of the accused.

The accused were produced before the court and remanded to judicial custody.

Investigation team

The case is being investigated by Detective Inspector P. Naresh under the guidance of Inspector K. Balaraju and supervised by senior officers of the Serilingampally Zone, Cyberabad.

Police officials appreciated the coordinated efforts of the investigation team in solving the case swiftly and ensuring complete recovery of the stolen property.
