Hyderabad: A 24-year-old MTech student, Pavan, died by suicide in Attapur after losing heavily on betting apps. The police said he hanged himself at his residence following repeated losses, including Rs 1 lakh in a single bet.

Desperate to recover money, Pavan, who hailed from Gadwal District, sold his iPhone and Royal Enfield bike to continue gambling, even using funds sent by his parents.

Police have registered a case and are investigating.

Many victims of online betting end up in debt after losing large sums of money. They suffer in silence, unable to communicate their financial difficulties with friends or family and eventually die by suicide. In some cases, entire families have died by suicide as a result of extreme financial stress. The situation is particularly serious for students who have developed an addiction to online gaming.

Taking serious note of the youth ending their lives by suicide after suffering huge financial losses, the Telangana Police has intensified vigil and cracked a whip on the social media influencers and celebrities. Cases were booked against 25 people, including actors Rana Daggubati, Prakash Raj, Vijay Devarakonda, Manchu Lakshmi and Nidhi Agarwal for allegedly promoting online betting apps
