Hyderabad: Customs officials seized 233.20 gm of gold worth Rs. 11.49 lakhs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad here on Tuesday. The gold was concealed inside a secret trouser pocket, the officials said.
The gold was retrieved from a flight that arrived from Kuwait.
Cases of gold smuggling at RGIA have been increasing rapidly in the past few weeks. The airport saw five gold smuggling cases in the last two weeks.
Last month, the Customs officials had seized 472.8 gm of gold worth Rs. 23.33 lakh from a flight that arrived from Guwahati.
On 27 November, the officials at RGIA had seized 410 grams of gold worth about Rs. 20.30 lakh from a passenger. The gold was concealed inside a talcum powder tin and suitcase frames. The gold was seized from a passenger who arrived from Dubai on an Indigo flight.
On 25 November, Customs had registered a case against a passenger for smuggling 320 gms of gold worth Rs. 15.75 lakh concealed inside deodorant bottles and toy cars. The passenger had arrived from Dubai on an Air India flight.
On 23 November, the Customs department had registered a case against a passenger for smuggling 233.4 gms of gold worth Rs. 11.56 lakh. The passenger who arrived from Sharjah had concealed it in two wristwatches.
