Hyderabad: Telangana High Court has directed the Suryapet district police to protect Kotla Bhargavi, the widow of a man allegedly murdered in a case of honour killing earlier this year.

Justice T. Vinod Kumar issued the directive on Friday while hearing a writ petition filed by Bhargavi. She approached the court after allegedly facing continuous harassment and life threats from her own family for marrying outside her caste.

According to case details, Bhargavi, a member of the BC-Goud community, married Vadlakonda Krishna alias Mala Bunty, who belonged to the SC-Mala community.

The marriage, conducted against the wishes of her family, allegedly led to the brutal killing of Krishna by her relatives on January 26, 2025. The accused were arrested following the incident.

Post her husband’s death, Bhargavi claimed that her family members subjected her to mental harassment, issued repeated threats, and warned her of dire consequences for marrying a man from a Scheduled Caste.

Despite multiple representations to the Suryapet police seeking protection, no action was taken, she alleged. Observing the rising instances of honour killings across the country, Justice Vinod Kumar emphasized the need for prompt protection in such cases.

The court ordered the Superintendent of Police, Suryapet, to ensure Bhargavi’s safety and take appropriate steps to prevent any further threats to her life.
