Hyderabad: The Jeedimetla Police on Saturday arrested a 21-year-old woman who allegedly posed as an Armed Reserve (AR) constable for several months to convince her family she had secured a police job.

The accused, Uma Bharathi from Qutubullapur, was caught after personnel at the Cyberabad police canteen grew suspicious of her conduct.

Suspicion triggered at Police Canteen

According to Investigating Officer (IO) Suresh Goud, Bharathi was first stopped at the Cyberabad police canteen when she failed to produce a valid police identification card. Her inability to answer routine departmental questions raised further red flags.

Police immediately alerted the Jeedimetla unit, who detained her during a vehicle check shortly afterward.

Failed exam sparked impersonation

Investigators said Bharathi had appeared for the constable recruitment exam two years ago but did not qualify. Unable to disclose her failure to her family, she reportedly created a façade of employment and maintained a routine as if she were reporting for duty every day.

“She never attended duty at any police station or participated in official roles. Her motive appears to have been limited to convincing her family and social circle,” the Investigating Officer said.

Uniform, badges and social media strategy

Officials said Bharathi purchased a police uniform complete with badges and insignia. She allegedly attended public events, including political gatherings and cultural programmes, where she blended in with uniformed personnel to avoid suspicion.

“She clicked photographs at these events and posted them on social media to reinforce the claim that she was working with the police department,” the officer added.

Probe into movements and contacts

Police are now verifying her daily activities during the period she claimed to be on duty. While some reports suggested she conducted cybercrime awareness lectures at educational institutions, police clarified that there is no evidence supporting those claims.

“We are checking her movements and interactions. At this point, it appears she only attended large public events without taking part in official police work,” the IO confirmed.

Case booked

Jeedimetla police have booked Bharathi under relevant sections for impersonation and unauthorized use of police insignia. Further investigation is underway to determine whether she received assistance or access to restricted locations during the impersonation.
