Hyderabad: 2,635 uncertified hand blenders worth ₹77L seized from Basheerbagh factory

Hyderabad: Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has seized 2,635 hand blenders worth more than ₹77 lakh from a factory outlet in Basheerbagh for being sold without the mandatory BIS certification and Standard Mark.

The action was taken as part of an enforcement drive to ensure consumer safety and compliance with the BIS Act, 2016.

No Certification, No Safety

The seized products, intended for household use to make smoothies, protein shakes, and milkshakes, lacked BIS certification, which is mandatory under the Quality Control Order (QCO) issued by the Government of India. According to BIS officials, such uncertified appliances pose serious safety risks to consumers.

“The absence of BIS certification is not only a violation of the law but also poses serious safety risks to consumers,” a BIS press release stated.

Legal Provisions Under the BIS Act

Hand blenders fall under Indian Standard IS 302 (Part 2/Section 14), which has been under mandatory certification since May 1, 2019. Sale, manufacture, storage, or distribution of these goods without certification violates Section 17 of the BIS Act, 2016.

Violators may face imprisonment of up to two years or a fine of at least ₹2 lakhs for the first offence. For repeat violations, the fine may go up to ₹5 lakhs or more. The offence is cognizable, and BIS has confirmed that legal proceedings will be initiated.

Nationwide Compliance Drive

The BIS Act empowers the Central Government to enforce mandatory compliance for specific products through QCOs. To date, 769 products have been brought under this regime. Manufacturing, importing, selling, or displaying these products without a BIS license is illegal and subject to strict penalties.

Consumer Caution Advised

Consumers are advised to check for the BIS Standard Mark before purchasing electrical appliances. The certification ensures that the product meets the necessary safety and quality standards defined by the Indian government.

For more information, consumers can visit the official BIS website or contact local BIS offices.
