Hyderabad: Telangana cybercrime police arrests 228 cybercriminals, including 27 women from 9 states

Hyderabad: Stepping up the crackdown, Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) arrested 228 cybercrime offenders, including 27 women, between January 1 and July 31, 2025.

The arrests were made through its seven cybercrime police stations and in coordinated operations across nine states. The action spanned a wide geographical area, with arrests made in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Telangana.

Young, educated offenders

Interestingly, a significant number of those arrested are young and educated, mostly between 18 and 30 years old. Many of them were found to be students, software engineers, private firm employees, and even bank staff.

The educational background of the offenders includes 49 graduates, 18 B. Tech degree holders and one law graduate. This underscores how educated youth are increasingly being drawn into cybercrime networks.

Significant drop in cybercrime incidents

According to a statement released by the bureau on Sunday, the extensive enforcement efforts have led to a 13 percent decline in cybercrime cases in Telangana during the first half of 2025. Officials credited this progress to a series of targeted special operations and stronger surveillance mechanisms.

Key offences and nationwide impact

The arrested individuals were allegedly involved in a variety of cyber offences, including fake call centres, investment and job scams, online child sexual exploitation, cyber slavery modules, identity theft, and digital impersonation.

In total, these accused are connected to 1,313 cybercrime cases across India, of which 189 are registered in Telangana. The total financial fraud involved is estimated at Rs 92 crore, highlighting the scale and sophistication of these cyber networks.

Three major operations in 2025

In February, the bureau busted a fake call centre operating from Patrika Nagar, Hi-Tech City, in Hyderabad. This led to the arrest of 63 individuals, mostly from Gujarat and Northeast India, who were reportedly targeting NRIs and US citizens through fraudulent schemes.

In May, a 10-day coordinated operation in Surat, Gujarat, resulted in the arrest of 20 cyber fraudsters allegedly linked to over 500 cases across the country. These individuals were involved in online job and investment scams.

In June, the bureau’s Child Protection Unit arrested 15 habitual offenders involved in 57 online child exploitation cases spread across Telangana. This operation specifically targeted repeat offenders who were using social platforms to exploit minors.

Offence-wise arrest details

The bureau provided a breakdown of the arrests made under specific crime categories: 66 for operating fake call centres, investment and job-related frauds (77), child sexual exploitation (15), cyber slavery modules (18), and online trading frauds (13). Several others were arrested for SIM box operations, identity theft, digital arrest scams, and online impersonation

Public awareness and support sought

The TGCSB reiterated its commitment to proactive detection, digital forensics, and swift legal action against cyber offenders. Citizens have been urged to remain cautious and report any suspicious online activity via the 1930 cybercrime helpline or the official portal www.cybercrime.gov.in.
