Hyderabad: The body of a fourth-year MBBS student at AIIMS Bibinagar was fished out from a lake near the institute on Thursday morning.
Identified as Abhijeet J, he was a native of Kerala. Police suspect suicide, although the motive remains unclear.
Abhijeet, a resident of Thrissur district in Kerala, was last seen leaving the campus hostel on a scooter around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. When he failed to return and did not respond to calls from friends, the hostel authorities alerted the college management and local police.
A search operation was immediately launched. Later that night, police found Abhijeetās scooter, footwear, and mobile phone on the bank of Bibinagar Lake, approximately 2 km from the AIIMS campus. Expert swimmers began searching the lake early Thursday and recovered his body.
"There was no suicide note, and he showed no signs of distress or unusual behavior before his disappearance," said Bibinagar Station House Officer M. Prabhakar Reddy. "His family is also unaware of any reasons that may have led him to this decision."
Abhijeetās father, J. Joseph, serves as an Inspector in the Kerala Police. His body was handed over to the family after a post-mortem examination.
Police have registered a case and are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
