Hyderabad: Banjara Hills police have booked a man for allegedly cheating a Group-I aspirant of Rs 7 lakh by falsely promising to secure a government job through political influence.

Promise of Group-I Job

According to the complaint, Abhiram, a resident of Kothapet in Hyderabad, has been preparing for Group-I and Group-II examinations since 2018.

During this period, he came in contact with Syed Haider Hussain, who claimed that he had earlier worked as an OSD to former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and had strong political connections.

Haider Hussain allegedly assured Abhiram that he could arrange a Group-I job for him.

Money collected in installments

Believing the promise, Abhiram reportedly paid Rs 6 lakh in instalments in 2023 after being told that funds were required to “initiate the process.” In July 2025, the accused allegedly collected another Rs 1 lakh, taking the total amount to Rs 7 lakh.

Threats after demand for refund

When Haider Hussain later demanded more money, Abhiram expressed his inability to pay and informed his family about the matter. On their advice, Abhiram asked the accused to return the money and provide a cheque equivalent to the amount taken.

However, the accused’s behaviour allegedly changed thereafter. He stopped responding to phone calls and began issuing threats, claiming political backing and allegedly warning Abhiram of dire consequences if he persisted.

Police case registered

Based on Abhiram’s complaint, the Banjara Hills Police Station registered a case and took up an investigation into the alleged job scam and criminal intimidation. Police officials said further action would be taken based on the findings of the probe.
