Hyderabad: The Hyderabad City Police, through sustained investigation, effective prosecution and coordinated support from the Bharosa Centre, has secured convictions in five separate cases involving grave sexual offences against minor girls.

The convictions were delivered by Sessions Courts and Fast Track Special Courts under IPC, BNS and POCSO Act provisions, reflecting the zero-tolerance approach of Hyderabad City Police towards crimes against children.

Convictions

In the five cases registered at Begumpet, Banjara Hills, Bhavani Nagar and SR Nagar Police Stations, the accused persons were convicted for offences including aggravated penetrative sexual assault, attempt to rape, criminal intimidation and child enticement.

The court awarded the following sentences:

- Rigorous Imprisonment for Life till death in one case involving sexual assault by the father of a 12-year-old victim.

- Rigorous Imprisonment for 25 years in one case involving sexual assault of a 9-year-old girl by a neighbour.

- Rigorous Imprisonment for 20 years in one case involving luring and sexual assault of an 8-year-old girl.

- Rigorous Imprisonment for 5 years in two separate cases involving sexual assault and attempt to commit rape on minor girls aged 4 and 8 years.

- In addition to imprisonment, the courts imposed fines and directed victim compensation ranging from Rs 2,00,000 to Rs 5,00,000, totalling substantial financial relief to the victims under victim compensation schemes.

Cases in brief

The cases involved minors aged between 4 and 12 years, assaulted by persons known to them, including neighbours, acquaintances, and in one case, the victim’s own father.

In all incidents, the victims disclosed the offences to their mothers/guardians, following which complaints were promptly registered and cases were referred to the Bharosa Centre for child-friendly procedures and statement recording.

Role of Bharosa Centre

In all five cases, the Bharosa Centre provided comprehensive support, including:

- Psychological counselling to victims and families

- Emotional and moral support through continuous follow-ups

- Legal counselling and trial support

- Assistance in medical care and victim compensation

Despite pressure from accused persons and their families to compromise, Bharosa personnel ensured that victims’ families remained confident and pursued the cases to their logical conclusion.

All victims are currently continuing their education, actively participating in school activities and performing well academically.

Investigation and prosecution

The convictions were the result of continuous monitoring of Dr Lavanya, NJP, DCP women Safety Wing, Hyderabad, meticulous investigation by concerned Inspectors and Sub-Inspectors, effective prosecution by Public Prosecutors and Special Additional Public Prosecutors and consistent coordination by Court Liaison Officers, Court Duty staff and Summons Duty personnel.

The efforts of the police officers and Bharosa teams were closely monitored by senior officers of the Women Safety Wing to ensure accountability and trial effectiveness.
