Hyderabad: Two residents of Kavadiguda lost Rs 6.01 lakh after inadvertently installing malicious APK files sent via WhatsApp.

Cybercrime officials said fraudsters are increasingly using fake challan links to gain access to bank accounts.

First victim loses over Rs 1 Lakh

A 48-year-old received a message claiming to contain details of an “RTO challan.” Trusting the link, he downloaded the APK file, after which two unauthorized withdrawals, Rs 51,226 and Rs 50,000, were made from his bank account.

HDFC account compromised for Rs 5 Lakh

In a separate case, a 41-year-old found four suspicious debits totaling ₹5 lakh from his HDFC account. Investigators discovered an APK file titled “RTA challan 140.apk” installed on his phone, likely giving fraudsters control of his banking credentials.

Police warn against suspicious downloads

Officials cautioned that cybercriminals are actively spreading harmful APK files through WhatsApp groups, messages, and social media. Once installed, these files access sensitive data, enabling illegal transfers.

Police advised citizens never to download APKs or applications from unverified sources and to refrain from sharing bank details, OTPs, or personal information.

How to report Cyber Fraud

Victims of unauthorized deductions should immediately file complaints at the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (www.cybercrime.gov.in) or call 1930. The Hyderabad Cybercrime Cell can also be reached by phone or WhatsApp on 8712665171.
