Illegal online betting clean-up: 124 social media accounts, 539 ads taken down by Hyderabad cops

Hyderabad: The Cyber Crime Police of Hyderabad City have identified and taken down 124 social media profiles that were actively promoting unlawful betting and gaming applications targeting Indian users.

According to officials, the action was part of sustained and proactive cyber surveillance initiatives undertaken over the past month.

539 paid ads flagged during month-long monitoring

Through continuous digital monitoring and intelligence-based tracking, police found that these 124 profiles were collectively running as many as 539 paid advertisements across various social media platforms.

The advertisements were designed to lure users, particularly youth, by promising easy money, assured returns, sign-up bonuses and referral commissions.

The profiles systematically circulated promotional content, referral links and inducement-based schemes to attract unsuspecting individuals into participating in illegal wagering and betting activities.

Police said such platforms often operate from foreign jurisdictions and function illegally in India, making enforcement and financial recovery more complex.

As a precautionary measure, all 124 identified profiles were reported to the platforms concerned. They have been taken down to prevent further dissemination of unlawful content.

Investigation to trace operators and financial channels

The Cyber Crime Police have launched further investigations to identify the individuals behind these profiles and to track the associated financial channels.

Officials stated that legal action will be initiated against those found responsible under relevant provisions of law.

Authorities are also examining whether local agents or influencers were involved in amplifying the reach of these advertisements.

Public advisory

Issuing a public advisory, the Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police reiterated that online betting and gambling activities are prohibited in Telangana. Participating in or promoting such activities may attract penal consequences.

Police warned that many illegal betting and gaming apps lure users with false promises of high returns and referral incentives. This exposes the users to significant financial losses, data theft and misuse of personal and banking information.

Citizens have been advised:

- Not to download or register on unauthorised betting or gambling platforms

- Not to share referral links or promotional content related to such apps

- To immediately report suspicious advertisements, links or profiles promoting illegal betting activities

Parents and guardians have been particularly urged to counsel young individuals about the risks and legal implications associated with online betting and gambling.

The Hyderabad Cyber Crime Unit has appealed to citizens to remain vigilant while engaging in online trading or investment activities.

The police have asked the public to avoid following unknown social media profiles and report suspicious online activity immediately by dialling the toll-free number 1930 or visiting the official cybercrime reporting portal.
